How Laquile Became My Favorite Typeface for Handmade Products

I was sitting at my desk yesterday, designing a new label for my lavender and honey candle. The scent is warm and soothing, but I needed a label that matched that feeling perfectly. My usual fonts felt too cold, too modern. Then I opened Laquile. I typed the product name into my design software, and it instantly clicked. The serif letters had a gentle, rustic charm, a bit like handwriting on a classic farmhouse sign, but crisp and legible enough for a small sticker. It was exactly the missing piece.

The Creative Personality of Laquile

What is Laquile? It’s a display font family designed specifically for logotypes and standout text. This isn’t a font for long paragraphs in a book; it’s a font for making a statement. The collection includes a beautifully balanced serif and a flowing script, which work together like a perfect pair. But the real treasure for a product maker like me is the extra set of dingbats—little illustrations that feel like classic farm sketches. Think of delicate floral sprigs, subtle botanical elements, and charming little icons. The overall mood is natural, a touch nostalgic, and full of creative appeal. It brings a sense of craftsmanship to text, which is why it feels so right on handmade goods.

When you choose a font for your products, it’s choosing a voice. Laquile’s voice is warm, inviting, and authentic. It doesn’t shout; it whispers with style. That visual personality translates directly to perceived quality. A greeting card with a title set in Laquile’s script feels more personal. A product tag using its serif feels more considered and premium. It helps build brand consistency because its distinctive look becomes recognizable to your customers, creating an emotional connection through design.

Bringing Laquile to Life on Real Products

For a crafter, a font is a tool, and Laquile is one of my most versatile ones. I use it across almost everything in my shop.

Labels, Tags, and Packaging

This is where Laquile shines brightest. The serif font is incredibly legible even at smaller sizes, which is crucial for product labels on jars, bottles, or small packages. I’ve used it for candle labels, honey jar tags, and seed packet branding. The script font is perfect for a single elegant line, like “Handmade With Care” on the bottom of a tag. Adding one of the dingbat illustrations as a subtle decorative element beside the text completes the look without needing extra graphic elements.

Stationery and Invitations

For wedding invitations, birthday cards, or seasonal greeting cards, Laquile offers a cohesive system. I often use the script for the main names or event title (“Emma & James” or “Winter Solstice Gathering”) and the serif for all the supporting details (date, time, location). This pairing creates a hierarchy that is both beautiful and functional. The dingbats can be used as border elements or tiny accents on envelope seals or RSVP cards.

Printable Wall Art and Digital Downloads

If you create digital printables, like wall art quotes or planner pages, Laquile adds immense production value. A simple “Gather Together” quote set in the script, surrounded by a few of the farm-style dingbats, becomes a complete, beautiful artwork ready for a customer to print and frame. For planner pages, the serif is excellent for monthly headers or section titles, making the pages feel designed, not just assembled.

Merchandise and Seasonal Items

I’ve also used Laquile for items like tote bags and mugs. For a tote bag design, using the script for a short phrase like “Market Day” feels lively and personal. The font’s character holds up well when transferred to fabric or ceramic. For seasonal products—think autumn signage or holiday gift tags—the dingbats provide that perfect, non-clichéd seasonal touch. A simple leaf dingbat beside “Pumpkin Spice” on a label instantly sets the mood.

Practical Advice for Using Laquile

Working with any display font requires a bit of hands-on testing to ensure it looks great in the final form.

Readability and Application

Because Laquile is a display font, it’s best suited for short phrases, names, titles, and decorative wording. It’s perfect for product labels, shop signage, wedding welcome boards, and boutique packaging. I avoid using it for very long blocks of text, like full instructions or lengthy descriptions. For those, I pair it with a clean, neutral sans-serif font that provides clarity without competing.

For cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette, the serif version of Laquile works wonderfully. The letters have enough weight and clear outlines to be cut cleanly from vinyl for stickers or iron-on transfers. Always do a test cut, especially if you’re using the script at a small size, to ensure delicate connections between letters are maintained.

When printing, such as for sticker sheets or folded cards, I always create a physical mockup first. Print a sample on the actual paper or sticker material you’ll use. This confirms the font’s details render well and that the color you’ve chosen works with the font’s mood.

Font Pairing for a Complete Look

Laquile’s own serif and script are designed to pair together, which is a huge advantage. For a more minimalist look, I sometimes pair the Laquile script with a very simple, thin sans-serif font for supporting text. This lets the script truly stand out as the hero. Conversely, using the Laquile serif for headers with a complementary handwritten font for short notes can also create a lovely, layered effect.

Checking the Technical Details

Before using any font for physical products or digital downloads you sell, always check its licensing. Confirm that Laquile includes a commercial license that covers your use. Then, explore the included styles thoroughly. Does it have alternates or ligatures that can give you more design options? Check the file formats to ensure you have the ones you need for your design software and cutting machine. Also, look at its multilingual support if your products might use words in other languages. These practical steps ensure your workflow is smooth and your use is professional.

In the end, finding Laquile was like finding a new favorite tool in my workshop. It didn’t just change my labels; it elevated the entire feel of my shop. From the moment a customer sees a product photo online with that distinctive typography, to the moment they hold the item in their hands, the font carries that story of care and creativity all the way through. It’s more than letters on a screen; it’s the final, beautiful touch on something made by hand.
